This tour will take you throughout the western coast of Liguria, where you will discover charming villages, amazing landscapes and enjoy their wine and food traditions.
The western Riviera of Liguria welcomes you. Its amazing villages have been rewarded with the Orange Flag: a recognition of quality awarded by the Touring Club Italiano to small towns (population 15,000 or less) in Italy for excellency in tourism, hospitality and the environment, such as Dolceacqua, Apricale and Triora.
Day 1:
You will arrive at your hotel in Sanremo in the afternoon. You have dinner included at the hotel
Day 2:
The Argentina Valley – Triora e Taggia
After breakfast we are goint to visit Triora, the town of witches.
Visit the "Museo Etnografico e della Stregoneria": a museum dedicated to the witch hunt and to witchcraft more in general. A year of bad weather and crop shortages in 1587 led to the accusation that witches were conspiring against Triora. A group of thirteen women from Triora and local villages were accused of sacrificing babies to The Devil. They were tried, tortured, and burned alive between 1587-89.
After the museum we will visit the medieval town and have lunch in a typical restaurant where we can taste traditional local food.
After lunch we will go to Taggia and you want to buy some local food you should try the “canestrelli”( flower shaped cookies) and “anici”( anise-flavored cookies cut as slices).
We will go back to the hotel for dinner.
Day 3:
The Nervia Valley – Dolceacqua e Apricale
The largest village in the valley, Dolceacqua is also the first you will see and is one of the most spectacular, with the very impressive ruins of the Doria castle perched high on top of the hill on the eastern bank of the Nervia. The village is divided into two sections: Terra, which is the oldest section on the eastern bank directly beneath the castle, and Borgo which is the more “modern” part of town on the opposite bank of the Nervia (“modern” means there’s a supermarket and shops but apart from that, both sides are pretty ancient). Both sides are connected by the Ponte Romano, a beautiful 15th century humpback bridge made of brick. Dolceacqua was the first town to obtain the Orange Flag.
Dolceacqua is famous also for the production of the Rossese , a DOC ruby red wine with a typical soft, aromatic and sweet taste .The Rossese is obtained from a unique vine and it has a limited production.
In the afternoon we are going to visit the medieval town of Apricale. The setting is pretty stunning, perched on a rocky spur and it’s a very nice place to wander around. If the weather is good we will sit in a place with a terrace overlooking the mountains and taste the “pansarole”,(a dough fried in olive oil and dusted in icing sugar) accompanied by a generous serving of zabaglione.
We will go back to the hotel for dinner.
Day 4:
Pigna,the historic center of Sanremo.
After breakfast we will visit the historic center of Sanremo, known as Pigna. The Pigna is described by the countemporary writer Italo Calvino in the famous novel “Il Sentiero dei Nidi di Ragno” (The Path to the Spiders' Nests). The old city of San Remo is a mixture of covered alleys and small squares, town houses supported by a forest of buttresses and mixed with pale colors and long silences. A walk along the “carrugi” and the stairways lead you to discover hidden squares following up to the peak where the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Coast will give you an amazing view of the Riviera.
